Butters, Blends and Brews

The Herbal Adventures Committee of the River Valley Master Gardeners is presenting Butter, Blends and Brews. We will demonstrate and sample various compound butters, spice blends, brews and infused waters. Ann Louise will chair this event and introduce Kombucha, a healthy, bubbly fermented form of tea loaded with probiotics to aid in digestion and the immune system.

Spring Master Gardener Plant Sale is Saturday April 18th

The Spring Master Gardener Plant Sale is Saturday April 18th from 8-3 in the First Christian Church parking lot.

The church is across the street from Creekmore and Sweet Bay at 3501 Rogers Ave.

Please come out and support your local Master Gardeners, buy some great plants and get help with any of your gardening questions.

CANCELLED -Herbal Cleaners to Make at Home

With spring peeking around the corner, it's time for that annual ritual associated with the season: spring cleaning. A few simple ingredients can create cleaning products that are healthy, earth-friendly, effective and smell absolutely great. The River Valley Master Gardeners Herbal Adventure Committee will demonstrate using homemade cleaners for your laundry, bath, kitchen, and windows. Snacks and refreshments provided. Reservations required.

The Missing Recipes

Here are the recipes that mysteriously missed the packet. The Sudden Cookies are in the previous post. Enjoy!

Zucchini and Red Pepper Frittata

1 large red bell pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large zucchini, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
3/4 cup 2% reduced-fat milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 ounces white cheddar cheese, shredded (about 1 cup)
4 large eggs, lightly beaten

Preheat broiler to high.

Cut bell pepper in half lengthwise; discard seeds and membranes. Place, skin sides up, on a foil-lined baking sheet; flatten with hand. Broil 8 minutes or until blackened. Wrap ­pepper in foil; let stand 15 minutes. Peel and slice.

Preheat oven to 350°.

Heat a 9-inch nonstick, ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil; swirl to coat. Add zucchini; cook 6 minutes. Stir in bell pepper; reduce heat to medium.

Combine remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Add to zucchini mixture; cook 2 minutes or until edges are set. Bake at 350° for 16 minutes or until center is set. Let stand 15 minutes. Cut into 6 wedges.

Orange Balls

1 12 oz package vanilla wafers
4 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 - 6 oz. can frozen orange juice
1 cup ‘chopped pecans or 1-cup coconut (optional)

Crush vanilla wafers to make crumbs, add sugar soft butter, orange juice. Mix well, shape into 1-inch balls and roll in either coconut or finely chopped pecans. Chill.

Lace Cookies

2 cups old fashioned oats –not instant
2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (that’s correct, only 1 tablespoon)
½ teaspoon salt
2 sticks butter
2 eggs
1-teaspoon vanilla

Mix well- oats, flour, sugar, and salt. Pour in very hot butter and stir until sugar is melted. (This step is very important) add egg and vanilla. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper (very Important) Drop batter in ½ level teaspoons on parchment paper 2 inches apart. Bake 10 12 minutes @350degrees. Note: all- spice or cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger about ¼ teaspoon can be added for spicier cookies.

Valentine Breakfast Tea

Our next Herbal Adventure is a Valentine Breakfast Tea.

Hannelore brought back tea from Europe for tasting. And of course we will have lots of yummy food.

Please wear a hat (or borrow one from us) and bring your favorite tea cup. We will take pictures of everyone in their finery.

Jane’s Yummy Recipes

You asked for them and here they are!


Cheese Ball

3 8oz. packages cream cheese, (room temperature)

2 bunches green onions, chopped, including the tops

2 jars dried beef, chopped

1 large T Accent

1 large T Worcestershire sauce

Mix and shape into balls. Roll in chopped nuts. (I use pecans)

 

This is the recipe for the gluten-free cookies

Sudden Cookies

2 egg whites, beaten stiff

1 cup brown sugar, packed

2 cups pecans. ground in food processor

1 teaspoon vanilla and a pinch of salt

Mix in order. Drop by ½ the teaspoonful on greased cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes at 300*

Impossible Pumpkin Pie

This recipe was left out of the handout of our October 25th Herbal Adventure.

Impossible Pumpkin Pie

1 16oz. can Pumpkin

13oz. canned milk (Pet or Carnation)

2 T Butter

2 eggs

¾ cup sugar

½ cup Bisquick

2 ½ tsp. Pumpkin pie spice

2 tsp. vanilla

Mix together and pour into greased pie pan. Bake at 350* for 50-55 minutes
